For those potato users out there who want to try out koffice add kde2 to
+the end of your deb line in sources.list
+
+ie...
+
+deb http://kde.tdyc.com potato kde contrib rkrusty kde2
+
+All the KDE 2.0 cvs debs are being installed into /opt/kde currently
+so that they can coexist with kde 1.1.x without hosing either. You'll
+need to make sure that /opt/kde/bin is in your path...and I don't
+believe the koffice stuff shows up on the menu currently...
+
+oh yea...don't report bugs on these packages at the present time. :)

+ + +
Ok,
+
+ (besides the usual lag in dns getting updated, we are back)
+
+For those of you wondering what had happened to me and snowcrash...
+short answer= "It died"...long answer "/dev/hda bit it big time...and
+of course...no backups... :)" (well...they were several months old)
+
+
+anyways...after almost 2 weeks of downtime it's back up and I've
+migrated all my debs back onto it. These include some new packages
+and the latest and greated KDE .deb's hot out of CVS.
+
+For those of you who are receiving this mail...You are subscribed
+to the Debian KDE mailing list....if you don't want this ...let me
+know and I"ll remove you...since I lost the box, I basically took
+all the email address's of the people who sent mail to me or to
+majordomo while the box was down and dumped them into the list.
+
+Other News: I have the latest qt2 beta stuff compiled up and
+in .deb format (currently potoato only). I will start building
+kde .debs as soon as I get time to build a new mico distro.
+
+Ivan
+
+P.S.
+
+The source path for /etc/apt/sources.list is now:
+
+deb http://snowcrash.tdyc.com potato kde contrib rkrusty
+
+(or slink)
+
+kde = main kde apps (kdebase, kdelibs, etc...)
+contrib = extra kde or related apps (qt, kapm, kdevelop, etc...)
+rkrusty = non-kde stuff...either packages I maintain for debian directly
+ or packages I have updated for slink or because the maintainer
+ is slow. :)

+ [KDE Packaging!] Updates, News, Whatever +
+

+ + +

+ + +
+ + +
Hi all,
+
+
+ I'd like to first start off by reminding people that this particular
+list (kde@tdyc.com) is for general KDE Linux Packaging Project notes,
+discussion, whatever. Distribution specific lists have been set up
+to give people more specific avenues for discussion.
+
+The main reason I bring this up is that it looks like we might be adding
+a new distribtuion to our lists here. So far we have Debian and RedHat,
+and we were recently contacted (and waiting for more information from)
+the fellows over at Mandrake.
+
+To tell you the truth this is getting kinda scary. :) so much for
+taking care of my own issues. hehehe....
+
+Anyways, you haven't heard from me in a while so I wanted to give you all
+a heads up on what's going on.
+
+ 1> KDE 2.0 development is in full force. Stephen Kulow had recently been
+working on the Debian packaging of it fixing all the stuff I broke. :) I
+have actually been able to successfully build kdelibs and koffice. I'm
+waiting a bit longer before I throw them up (probably tomorrow or tuesday)
+just to make sure I'm not going to break anything else. The goal is to
+allow those who want to try them out (remember they are beta) to do so
+without breaking anything currently on their system.
+
+ 2> I've been working alot on the web site. I'm working on some back end
+for managing the package list and giving the whole site a common look and
+feel so that all sections (redhat, debian, future sections) all look
+similar. The package listing will be dynamically built soon...I'm still
+working on plugging in all the information and fixing up the backend stuff
+so we can manage it easily. The goal is to allow people to easily see/get
+the latest information/files.
+
+ 3> The BTS (bug tracking system) seems to work, but is a bit buggy itself.
+The good news on this is that I know what's buggy and I can work around it.
+So please keep using it for all your reports. I will be making the modifications to it soon to handle redhat packages as well.
+
+ 4> RedHat packages are showing up left and right now on the site. Stay
+tuned for the RedHat page to show up online.
+
+ 5> For those of you in Debian land wanting to help package stuff, I'll be
+throwing up some guidelines (well, more like helpfull hints) for packaging
+of files. This way everything you get from here is known (or should) work
+with everything you get from here. (and hopefully Debian itself)
+
+Ivan

+

+ + +

+ + +
+ + +
Update:
+
+ I'm building KDE2.0 debs as I write this email. I'm having some
+problems compiling kdebase and koffice but Stephen Kulow said he's didn't
+have a problem (tho he was in openlinux) and that he would check it out.
+
+A few notes about the new .debs. We just moved everything back into
+the /usr tree from /opt. We are getting closer to a release of some
+sort whether alpha or beta so we need to start testing it within the
+actual debian structure.
+
+I will be putting all the new kde2 debs into the kde2 sub tree on
+kde.tdyc.com
+
+deb http://kde.tdyc.com potato kde2
+
+Once I get a successful potato build I will build them all on slink.
+
+For those of you curious...koffice will not be broken down. Stephen and
+I talked about it and came to the conclusion that it would be a huge
+royal pain as it's all tightly integrated at this point in time and would
+be near impossible. If someone figures out a way to do it *cleanly* let
+me know.

forgot about this. Koffice does compile and work. but it complains
+about a type "OpenPart" ...if you bring up a shell and type kword it
+works.
+
+quick solutions..after installing koffice, go into
+
+/usr/share/applnk/KOffice
+and edit each file in there changing the Type=OpenPart line to
+Type=Application.

Ok, for those of you wanting to try it out, it's there for both
+potato and slink.
+
+Please don't report bugs to me. :) Not until it's considered beta. They
+work so fast on this stuff by the time you report something they will have
+already fixed it probably. There are a few packages that won't compile
+currently (kdeadmin and korganizer) but I think I got the rest of the

Debian KDE

+
+
Welcome to the Debian/KDE Package page. My name is Ivan E. Moore II and +I am a Debian Developer who some how managed end up packaging up KDE. I'm +not the official Maintainer nor do I do all the work. Stephan Kulow is the +official guy but he spends most of his time making KDE work. So in step I. +

+

My main goal has been and will continue to be to make the KDE packages +work! :) They should install easily, work, and also remove easily. Things +should work the way they are supposed to and not cause any problems with +any other packages. So far I am making this happen. The KDE folks have +been really good at fixing problems and helping out in general.
+

+

In what free time I have had, I have started to package up all the extra +applications for KDE out there. I do not claim to be the official place to +get these, but I make them available for those who want them. I am working +on contacting the Authors and verifying that no one else is already packaging +them but that will take time as I'm still trying to do alot of other things. In +order to make things work smoother, I have setup a mailing list here for use +by anyone to talk about the KDE Packages I maintain. Bug reports should be +submitted to the KDE Bug Tracking System. +Please do not report bugs to the Debian Bug Tracking System.
+

+

+

+

If you have a package that you have made and want me to put it up +in my archive, let me know. I don't want to do all the work. :) I have +scripts in place already to do auto-updates and everything so I'm ready for +your help with this archive.
+
To subscribe to the Debian/KDE Mailing list, you can do one of 2 things. +Go to http://kde.tdyc.com/archive/ +and register that way, or send email to:
+

+

+

+

This list is archived to the web (just started to do this) and is also +searchable. Below you will find the link to the online archive. If there +are programs out there that you would like me to package, please let me know. +I have it down to an art. :) If you are an author of a program which I +packaged and didn't talk to you about it...you can yell at me on the +mailinglist so that everyone can see. :) To send mail to the mailing list, +just send it to kde-debian@tdyc.com. +

+

There are a few ways to get the KDE/Debian packages. The first and +best way is to add a few lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list file. +This will allow you to just have apt handle it all. The other way is to +ftp in. There are 3 different sections I +have setup for apt. The first is kde which contains the core KDE files. The +second is contrib which will be all the extra KDE packages I or others have +created. The third is rkrusty which are all non-KDE pacakges I either maintain +or have made to help others out with.

KDE Linux Packaging Project

+
+
Welcome to the KDE Linux Packaging Project. The goal of which is to +provide a central location for obtaining KDE and related Linux packages. +Currently we provide packages for Debian, Mandrake, RedHat, S.u.S.E., and +KSI Linux. The people involved with this project are:
+
+ +

+

If you are interested in helping out with this project by ether providing +packages for a distribution or donating bandwidth please contact Ivan. We are constantly fighting for places that +can both handle the bandwidth and disk space. Currently we'd like to thank +the following people/groups for donating their facilitites for our use.
+

+

+

+

We host a mailing list for each distribution and a general one as well. +Each list is archived to the web and is also searchable. +Below you will find the link to the online archive. +

KLPP

+
+

+

I've decided to kill the KLPP and my packaging of anything other than +the Debian woody version of KDE 2.0. The reason is due to 1 person. I know +you are saying..but it's just one person. Well...I volunteer my time and +one person getting stressing me out because I don't do enough to make his +life easier is one person too many. I started the KLPP to help others out. +I figured since I'm doing alot of this for my wife I'll throw it up for others +to benefit. Well, aparantly this dumbass believes that isn't what I started +the KLPP for. His belief is that I voluntered to take care of all KDE +packaging for Debian and if I can't do it myself, to find someone who can.
+

+

Well, I have to say this is the one drawback to an opensource volunteer +world. The fact that people are used to being able to expect a level of +perfection from the people producing things they use. We created a lazy world +and you can't be lazy in the opensource world. You have to be willing to take +imperfection and either live with it or take an active role to make it better. +
+

+

I'm just tired of this. I have so much on my plate right now with the +packaging of KDE 2.0 for Debian woody and the other packages I maintain. And +that's just my Debian duties. And don't take this as an opportunity to say +that I'm whining or trying to put a guilt trip on anyone. Screw that. I +have taken these tasks on as my responsibility. For these tasks I will go +out of my way to make sure they are done. The KLPP I never made such +an agreement. Next to nobody has stepped forward to help...I know there are +tons of people using the resulting packages...but no one packaging anything. +
+

+

For this I say goodbye on this plane. I'll leave the files up for at +least a week. And maybe once KDE 2.0 is officially released and I get the woody stuff worked +out I might build some potato packages for you all.
